How to move to the Netherlands from the US.

A long term move to The Netherlands is an attractive idea, whether it be for work or change of lifestyle. Currently, the Dutch immigration law dictates that US citizens need to acquire a residence permit if they are planning to live and work anywhere in The Netherlands.

Sponsorship is required for US citizens. If you are moving to The Netherlands for work as an employee, skilled migrant or researcher your employer will need to provide sponsorship. Alternatively, a family member will need to provide sponsorship if you are relocating for family reasons.

Applications for Dutch residence permits are submitted to the IND (Dutch department of Immigration & Naturalisation). Applications can be lodged with the IND in the Netherlands by yourself, your sponsor or easily with Dutchify. Alternatively, you can lodge an application from outside The Netherlands at a Dutch embassy or consulate in your country.

If you choose to submit your application yourself while in The Netherlands the IND will place a residence endorsement sticker in your passport allowing you to stay in the country while your application is being processed. This also means you will not be eligible to work during this period.

Application forms can be found online or in IND offices.

Depending on the type of residence permit you are applying for you will need to provide supporting documents such as social security & bank account information or birth certificates. Any foreign documents are required to be legalised in The United States.

Once a submission has been made and the fee paid, the IND has up to 90 days to process, though a decision is usually reached sooner.

Note: Applications with errors are likely to be rejected and fees will not be refunded. Dutchify guarantees first-time approval and manages the entire process liaising with the IND on your behalf.
